Today, we tried Dr. Praeger's California Burger Patties for the first time. These are meatless, vegan patties that contain only vegetables, canola oil, soybeans, oat bran and corn starch. I am not a big fan of packaged foods, but on some nights when the day has been particularly busy, they get dinner on the table fast and easily. And when the ingredient list does not sound like a chemical factory, I am very pleased with our choice. The flavor of the Dr. Praeger's veggie patties was excellent. We served them with Ezekiel Sprouted Grain Burger Buns, spinach leaves, freshly sliced tomatoes, grainy mustard, ketchup and barbecue sauce as well as some home-made oven fries.
Dr. Praeger makes a whole array of different veggie burgers, veggie chicken nuggets and patties and veggie pancakes. Available through our United order once a month. Give them a try! Dr. Bronner's Soaps are one of those wonderfully versatile green products that we all have come to love over the years. They are castille soaps, completely non-toxic and safe. No need to lock up your cleaning products if you are cleaning with Dr. Bronner's! They are certified not only under the USDA National Organic Program but also Fair Trade under IMO’s “Fair for Life” program. A combination of organic extra virgin coconut, olive, jojoba and hemp oils, together with pure essential oils, Dr. Bronner's creates a unique soap that cleans effectively without being aggressive and produces a velvety-lather that leaves the skin silky-smooth and refreshed. The liquid soaps work well as floor cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, and as toilet bowl cleaners. The wonderful feature of Dr. Bronner's Soaps is that they need to be diluted 1:18, so a single bottle will last you a long time. It will make cleaning cheaper than using commercial cleaning products and it is a product you can feel entirely good about. Dr. Bronner's comes in many different scents: Tea Tree, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Lavendar, Baby Mild, Almond, Rose and Citrus. At Greener Living Co-Op ,they are available in many different sizes ranging from 4 oz to 1 gallon. Our family uses the Tea Tree scent in place of commercial toilet bowl cleaner. No chemicals to almost knock you out as you squirt the toilet bowl. The Tea Tree scent is fresh and clean smelling and Tea Tree oil has anti-septic properties. This is the only case where I use the Dr. Bronner's Soap straight, squirting a little around the rim of the toilet bowl daily and then giving a good and thorough swish with the brush.
When cleaning, dilute the soap 1:18 with water. It's a ballpark figure. Fill a bucket with water and add a squirt of Dr. Bronner's. For many more household and personal care tips on how to use Dr. Bronner's soap, please visit the Bronner Mom.
We have Nancy's low-fat, plain yogurt in 32 oz container in our split basket at United right now. The order closes this Sunday, so I wanted to take the opportunity to put in a plug for this wonderful product. Nancy's is a small, family owned and operated dairy - the kind of company we should all support. Well, let me just tell you what you can do with this wonderful product - aside from the obvious which is to eat it. Since this product is organic and does not use any binders, you can make yogurt cheese (or "Quark" as we refer to it in Germany) from it. Yogurt Cheese is an extremely versatile, high-protein condiment or snack. To make, just place the yogurt in a cheese cloth, twist and tie it, and let it hang from a hook or a wooden spoon placed on top of 2 gallon sized jars over a bowl for 12-24 hours. The longer you let it drip, the firmer your cheese will turn out. For those folks who have a problem with leaving dairy out on the counter that long, you can set this up in the fridge. The liquid you will notice dripping from the cheese cloth is the whey. A health-product in and of itself in Germany (they sell it in the health food stores as a drink), you can either drink it or discard it. What remains in the cloth is your yogurt cheese.
You can sweeten it with a little honey or stevia and eat it with fresh organic fruit. You can use it in place of cream cheese on your toast. You can make a wonderful cake frosting, creamy dressing (home-made Ranch, anyone?) from it and shape it into logs after spicing with a little sea salt and fresh herbs. It is that time of year - time for our Celtic Sea Salt order.
Celtic Sea Salt® Brand Light Grey Celtic® is totally unprocessed, kosher and hand harvested. It is dried by the sun and the wind, retaining the ocean’s moisture and locking in a vast array of vital trace elements. Celtic Sea Salt® Light Grey Celtic® is a coarse, moist salt that gets a light grey hue from the pure clay sole it is harvested from. There is no comparison, in taste or in health effects, between mineral-rich Celtic Sea Salts® and chemically-treated iodized salts. Celtic Sea Salt® Light Grey Celtic® has a rustic old-world flavor that is more assertive than other salts. Try using it in cooking, for soups and stews, grilling, or grind it with a mortar & pestle or salt grinder. Celtic Sea Salt® is certified organic by Nature and Progres, the highest level of certification allowed in France. I have been using Celtic Sea Salt for years. We have a salt grinder for the table and I have a big glass jar of it right next to my stove for cooking. Celtic Sea Salt really brings out the flavor in all my vegetable dishes and enhances nutrition for my family. It is thick, grainy and moist and just reminds me of something that is alive rather than that dead, white processed salt available everywhere else. The flavor of the Celtic Sea Salt is outstanding. You can make a difference for your body, your family, the environment and the planet by using this salt. The order deadline is January 19, 2011.
